Andrew Weaver has won a seat for the Green Party, becoming the first Green Member of Legislative Assembly in British Columbia history with 40,7% of the votes in the district of Oak Bay–Gordon Head, while the Liberals won the provincial elections by large majority (50 seats out of 85).
Andrew Weaver is a university professor who was part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Johan Hamles, previously member of the Global Greens Coordination from Europe and former Director of Canadian Green Party said: ”The victory of Andrew Waver is an extremely positive milestone for the Canadian Greens, one step forward after the election of Elisabeth May as member to the federal parliament in 2011. The situation was challenging also due to the Canadian electoral system, similar to the UK one first past-past the post. Good merit also to the support of many volunteers from all over the country”.
Canadian Green Leader and MP Elizabeth May reacted to BC election results “Andrew is the first Green ever elected in a provincial legislature in Canada. For the Green movement in Canada, tonight’s results are elevating.
